Features of Colored Label Manager specific fields that are not supported on Jira native ‘Labels’ field.

  • Activate coloring to labels.

  • Select 'Customize labels for this project' to manage predefined labels for this project independent from other projects.

  • As a project administrator you can restrict a label field, in this case you prevent users to create new label items , they are required to choose existing ones.

This fosters consistency across fields like Definition of Done (DoD), Definition of Ready, Acceptance Criteria, or Simple select list.

  • Allow project admins to manage available label items for their project independent from other projects or Jira administrator’s help.

  • Generating powerful reports , there’s absolutely no coding required and certainly no need to learn Jira Query Language (JQL) for that matter. You can make fully customized reports just by selecting options from dropdowns.

  • Add a description to your label to make the context more clear to your project users , Jira users can always check to see whether a label already exists before creating it; remember, too, that it might simply be a question of spelling or case variation..

As Jira Administrator:

  1. Click on Apps

  2. Go to → Colored Labels

  3. Click on Colored Label Fields

  4. Click on Create Colored Label Field

Atlassian Expert good practices

  • Avoid using abbreviations unless they are widely understood and accepted by your team. This will, in turn, help avoid synonyms.

  • Always add a description to your label to make context of uses more clear to your team .

  • Always check to see whether a label already exists before creating it; remember, too, that it might simply be a question of spelling or case variation.

  • You can also click on Click to see issues to jump to the issue navigator and see a list of all issues with the label.

Selecting Label Color Settings

Just like other settings - you can select the projects specific ‘Label Color Settings' in the project administrations page.

New created Label have by default the color grey-light.

Label specific color means, that just like Epics, label will have a predefined color.

Colors can indicate labels with higher priority, or whatever you like those colors to mean within your Jira instance.

Already assigned labels on issues will get the color updated based on selection.
